hey, i think that it is wonderful that you are wanting to get you ol' man some fishing gear. most people think that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach..naaaaaa it is through his tackle box. if you want to get him a good set up and not drop a whole lot of money..not trying to say that you arn't willing to drop a fortune but you don't have to to get quality gear. if you are wanting to get him a real and rod combo. i love the phlugher reels. they run any where from 40 dollars up to 200 and some change. i got mine for around 65. love it would't trade it for nothing. i also like the abu garcia reels. you can get a great abu garcia for around 40 dollars. either one that you might choose is a great reel. i prefer the phlugher over the abu but the abu is a great reel as well. now for a rod, you don't have to drop a pile of money into a rod, don't dp it please. shakespear makes a line of rods called the ugly stick. alot of people bash on these rods for the mear fact that 1-they don't have a clue about that they are using and 2- alot of people swear up and down that you have to spend a lot of money on a rod to get a good one.you can get a great rod for around 30-40 dollars all depending on where you go. get him a 6'6'' medium action shakespear ugly stick and add on one of those reels that i mentioned above. i promise that he will love it. and i almost can garantee that some others will read what i wrote and bash on the ugly sticks....when they do don't pay them any mind. with about 100-120 invested you can have your man a GREAT set up. that i promise you. the lures are a little different for me to tell you about. it all depends on where you are. i am in ga and the waters maybe different than your waters up here. you can go to a bait and tackle shop like bass pro or dick's and ask a sales clerk but naa don't do that. i can garantee you that if you go up to anyone looking at lures that he/she will gladly tell you what works well in your area. there is something about us fisherman/fisherwomen. we will always talk to another fisherman and tell him/ her what we think about different lures rods reels ect. every fisherman has advice and a story to tell. just go up to him/her and ask what he/she thinks about the lures that would work best in your area. good luck and good fishin. give me a hollar back when you see the joy in his eyes

Before we moved to the lake my husband would go fishing on a regular basis and it was very rare that I would join him but since moving I have developed a great love of fishing and we have now become quite competitive on our relative catches. He always had a decent collection of fishing equipment and tackle but since we have moved to the lake his collection has grown dramatically. He likes to make sure whoever comes to the house that he has enough fishing gear to outfit them no matter how much equipment they may have themselves. He often jokes with the local fishing gear store that if he ever runs out of stuff to give him a call because he probably has a bigger selection than the store.
