Fishing Guide

We live on a lake in central Minnesota. This lake is one of the premiere fishing lakes in the state. Many people come here on day and week fishing trips. Most people bring their own boats, but there are others that go out on launch trips or hire one of the many private fishing guides to take them out fishing. This allows for business opportunities for many people that live on the lake, but people should make sure that the fishing guides that are hired know the lake as well as the feeding patterns of the fish.

We had fished this lake for many years prior to buying our home. My husband had been fishing here when he was a young boy. With the modern technology of GPS and lake mapping on marine electronics, it is very easy to find different depths and fishing spots on the lake. After we had lived on the lake for a year my husband contacted one of the local fishing guides and asked if he could enter some his fishing spots on the lake on his GPS. This particular guide has been very successful on the lake. He told my husband that he did not want to share the fishing spots because he did not want a lot of other people fishing where he was. My husband mentioned this to a friend of ours that owns the local bait shop. The bait shop owner laughed and told my husband that this particular guide does not know how to use GPS and so he does not own a unit, which is why he did not share any of the fishing spots. The bait shop owner told us that there are no requirements to pass in order to be considered a guide. He said that many of the people that advertise their services as fishing guides simply take people out in their boats and hope to catch some fish. Some people are more successful at this than others, but there are no requirements.

I was surprised by this information. If I was going to a lake to fish I would assume that the people that are listed as fishing guides would have safety training and other certification in order to take others out onto the lake. You do have to have coast guard training if you have a launch or a boat over thirty five feet, but there are many guides that have twenty foot boats that take people out fishing. This was disappointing to my husband because one of his retirement dreams was to be a guide on the lake. Now that we live here we realize that there are more than enough people already offering to guide. I told my husband that we should look into having an actual service that would provide a more special outing than just a day in a fishing boat. We are going to plan a business around the adventure of fishing rather than just advertising guide services.

Does anyone know the Hot Spots for Intermediate Lake in Michigan?

I am looking for fishing Hot Spots on Intermediate Lake in Central Lake, Michigan. I have fished there before but still have not found a spot. I will be up there in begining of September! Thanks for any help!

Krocodile Spoon Lures?

i bought some 5/8 oz and 1 oz krocs for SURF FISHING and they dont seem to produce anything... i tried everything there is to it (fast, slow, ripping, etc..) and got mad and bought some other design krocs.. and still nothing ): at the same spot, i threw my Lucky crfts and bam got hit >
1: how do YOU use them?

nothing yet?.. i guess no one actually uses these... ):

they work well in freshwater lakes and streams. i would buy a lure that is at least 6 inches long to catch something in the surf. the best bait for me is softshell sand crabs

What is a good reel to use for trolling.?

One large enough to hold a decent length of 27 pound test lead core line. I usually lake fish. Reel must have a line out clicker and also would you recommend a level wind reel? I have been considering an Abu Garcia but have no opinion on the size. Thanks

Tuna are huge and delicious saltwater game fish. Tuna fishes are large in size and hence many enjoy fishing as it is a big game fishing target. There are many types of tuna fishes: * Albacore * Black fin * Skipjack * Blue fin * Yellow fin These tuna fishes are mostly captured in coastal estuary waters and also offshore. In order to go for tuna fishing, a lot of information must be gathered such as recent fish counts reported by other captains, popular fishing locations which have been producing numerous hookups, current water surface temperature and the weather must be continually monitored.

One of the best methods for tuna fishing is trolling. Trolling is done with feather jigs, miniscule squid imitations, live or fresh dead bait and even hard bodied lures. Any layman having minimal amount of experience with fishing must know trolling where eight or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish are drawn through the water behind a moving boat. Many enjoy tuna and they find it to be an exciting adventure. But it may be really frustrating unless you know what you're looking for.

The season matters a lot for tuna fishing since you will not be able to find any during the summer. The tuna stay near the surface of the water when hunting for bait fish. During winter, the tuna go down deeper into the water and rarely risk up to the surface. It is better for tuna fishing during the late afternoons. An additional method for tuna fishing is drifting and builds a burley trail in order to wait for the fish to show up.

When each and every time the fish turns up to the anglers transmit out a baited hook in to the trail for tempting fishes to bite. In certain situations, chum or bait fish styled flies proves to work at times. While doing this, you must remember that the tuna hits very hard, hooks themselves, and yanks the line off the reel at a rapid speed. Sometimes large fishes might give you the fight of your life, battling for as long as several hours before it wins by snapping the line or leader, or you may be the winner by getting it on board the boat.

A few tips for tuna fishing: * Control your reel speed * Keep your lines tight * Pay attention to nature * Pay attention to the season Whether you are fishing for Yellowfin or Blackfin tuna, carefully consider the tuna fishing techniques you plan to incorporate. Therefore tuna fishing during early mornings or late afternoons during low light.

Level Wind Reels – Pros and Cons

One of the most common questions posed by inshore saltwater anglers is which reel type to purchase. The two options, a level wind conventional reel or an open style conventional reel have both advantages and disadvantages depending on a number of features. This is a decision that nearly ever angler is going to have to make at one time or another, so having the information on the benefits and pitfalls of each type of reel is critical to purchasing the right one.

The decision of what type of reel to purchase requires that you not only consider your personal preferences, but also how you intend to use the reel (what type of fishing) and what type of line that you normally fish with. Each factor must be carefully weighed and once you have accounted for them, you can make the best possible decision about which reel works best for you.

Let’s consider the level wind reel first – simply stated, this features a moving guide that helps your line run smoothly back and forth across the reel and helps ensure your line rewinds as neatly as if it were factory wound. This is accomplished by the use of a pawl that runs back and forth across the front of your reel on a worm shaft. In comparison, an open style conventional reel has no guide line and it’s up to the angler to ensure the line is spooled back correctly.

An overwhelming factor in either reel type is of course your own personal preference. Surf-casters will tell you that they would not consider level wind reels because of two major factors (A) they are more susceptible to malfunction and (B) they cast differently. It’s important to remember that a saltwater surfcaster almost always hikes to their favorite fishing spot – the fact is that because of this they nearly always have only one reel and rod with them and equipment failure could completely ruin their day. Level wind reels can fail because of just a few grains of sand in the mechanism and they also create another contact point between your line and your reel – which of course are unique to the level wind reels. Open faced conventional reels simply don’t have these significant pitfalls making it the reel of choice for saltwater surfcasting anglers. Open faced conventional reels simply do not have the moving parts that are found in level wind reels, making them far less susceptible to needing repairs.

Various types of fishing lines are discussed in another article, but for the purposes of reels, you will want to review the line you use most often. If you’re more likely to use monofilament line, you’re more likely to lean towards a level wind reel. Frankly, a level wind reel is best for monofilament line because of the problems that trying to rewind the line manually using your thumb for a guide. Monofilament line tends to bunch up and will literally pile up near the frame and get high enough to interfere with proper reel functioning. If you’re using braided line you’re unlikely to run into these problems as it simply winds better without a lot of help from the angler.

Monofilament is a great line – it’s cost effective, it’s lightweight but it does have some downsides. One of them which can be problematic when you’re reeling in the catch of the day is this lines tendency to pile up in one spot on the spool when you’re reeling it in. Let us face it – we all understand the mechanics of reels – the more line that piles up the more likely it is to get high enough to interfere with proper reel operation. Worse yet, this line can bind the spool against the frame which creates even more problems. It’s a bit ironic – these types of issues almost always occur when you have a fish headed right for you – the line piles up at the back of the reel and you’ve missed your opportunity.

This common characteristic forces anglers to learn how to guide their line back on the open reel. This is not difficult to do, it merely takes some practice to learn how to rewind your line evenly. Using their thumb, most anglers will quickly find that their line will go back on an open reel easily. One of the downsides however, is that it’s easy to get distracted from the care necessary for even winding when you’re reeling that big fish in.

If you are a braided line user it’s inevitable that you have noticed that braided line simply doesn’t have the issues of monofilament line. While braided line doesn’t have the memory of monofilament, it somehow winds back perfectly on a reel without you needing to guide it with your thumb. If you’re using braided Dacron line, chances are that you will not need to consider purchasing a level wind reel. If you are fishing monofilament line, the level wind conventional reel is most likely worth purchasing.

Ask any repair shop owner, myself included, and you’ll find that the level wind reel is one of the top items that are repaired annually. It doesn’t matter who made it, each manufacturer is treated equally in this case. Level wind reels are far more susceptible to failure than open reels. This could be in part that when you’re fishing with a 20lb drag, and you land a good sized fish, additional pressure is put on the line guide system. Combine this additional pressure with salt and sand that might be missed during cleaning and insufficient lubrication and you’re no doubt going to have your level wind reel fail. If you use open faced conventional reels, you are not going to have this problem.

Remember to consider not just your personal preferences, but also whether you’re going to be using monofilament or braided line, if you’re going to be casting or rigging before you decide if you are going to purchase an open conventional reel or a level wind conventional reel.

Fly fishing rods allow the fisherman to test his skills because there's less emphasis on the fishing gear and more emphasis on simulating the action of prey in order to attract fish. Fly fishing rods are generally longer in length and use heavier line to support the weight of heavier fishing lures. In addition, rods for fly fishing are generally more flexible and thinner than other types of rods.

Beachcasting fishing rods are built to facilitate very long casts, so they generally range in length from 8 to 15 feet. Since the casts are so long, beachcasting-fishing poles allow for attachment of larger reels that hold greater than normal amounts of line. The length of the pole also helps the fisherman place his cast out beyond the breakers.

Spinning rods bridge the gap between fly fishing tackle and bait casting tackle. Poles for this type of fishing range in length from 5 to 9 feet and have extra tip sensitivity. The reel and guides on a spinning rod mount on the bottom of the pole. A spinning rod is versatile in that the fisherman can use a fly, a small lure or live bait. It's also possible to cast the lure or bait up to 4 times farther than with other types of fishing rod.

Spin casting rods are perhaps the most common types of fishing pole. On this type of fishing tackle, the guides and reel mount to the top of the rod, making it easier to reel in the fish. A device on the reel controls the line.

Deep-sea fishing rods are quite long, up to 11 feet. These poles are substantially thicker than other types of poles and have heavier guides and tips. The line is also heavier to accommodate larger fish.

Ultra-light fishing poles are designed for smaller fish and are perfect for children due to their shorter length (4 to 6 feet). When paired with an inexpensive reel and lightweight line, this fishing equipment is perfect for fishing off a dock or boat with your favourite youngster.

Fishing Tackle - More Teaching Tips

Start early in the morning, perhaps even at sunrise, since that's often a prime time for fishing. Make the excursion as exciting as possible. If catching fish for sport only, then tell your children to release the fish, thus encouraging them to have respect for natural things. Can you think back to the moment you hooked the first fish? How do you setup a baitcasting reel?

I have a Pinnacle baitcaster. I understand that the star wheel is for the drag and the thumb wheel right behind that is a brake but what is the dial on the other side that has the numbers on it for? How do you set all these? Thanks.

The star drag is to keep the line from breaking when you catch a big fish. If you have it too loose the fish can get the line wrapped around something under water and break it. I set mine until no line slips until it is almost at the breaking point.
The round knob behind it and the dial on the other side are both adjusted to eliminate the backlashes that sometime occur when you are fishing these type of reel
The best way to adjust them is to take a lure and tie it to the line-hold out rod and put setting on the dial to it's highest setting-push the casting button on the reel and let the lure fall to the ground- if it falls slowly and hits the ground and there is no overrun of line on your reel it is adjusted about right- if it falls fast and there is some overrun of line on your reel you need to turn the knob on the right side until it falls slow and their is no overrun- you can fine tune it while fishing with the magnetic adjustment on the left side of the reel. It will take a good bit of practice to get used to this type of reel if it is your first time. Just remember that if you adjust it too tight it will not backlash but your cast will be short- it is better to start out this way until you become adept at the casting bit- You can always lighten up on it when you get better at casting . Most effective way of killing ants in grassed area?

I have ants in my lawn, what is the most effective way of getting rid of them? Some people have mentioned using the feeders/ bait traps, are these any good?

It is a fairly large grassed area, the ants appear to be red ants, I am in the UK, any tips/ advice would be appreciated.

You can buy a packaged 'dust' here in Australia that I think is called "Ant-Rid" or similar, and you can buy this from supermarkets. I'm not sure how effective it is, but I have seen people I know use it for similar problems. The problem with these products are that they are generally highly toxic, and might be dangerous to your pets, kids, and surrounding wildlife. Here is some guidance I have found useful from the Green Harvest Organic Gardening Supplies website:

" ANTS OUTDOORS
Try to tolerate ants outdoors as they are part of the environment and control many pests such as termites, cockroaches, fleas and flies. Increasing the humus levels and using mulch will discourage ants in the garden. Biting ants close to the house, children's play area or gardens may need to be controlled using the Spraying Treatment outlined below.

Flooding

Flooding with water is useful to rid ants from plant pots.

Spraying Treatment

Make up a spray containing 500 ml of water, a quarter cup of kerosene, a quarter cup of liquid detergent and 4 dessertspoons of vegetable oil, shaken together. Spay a circle about .5 m radius from the nest entrance. Pour a cup of water slowly into the nest entrance, wait a few minutes and then spray all the ants on the surface with the homemade spray or a pyrethrum-based spray. Repeat this procedure every 2-3 days until the ant population declines. Lay 3-6 baits as described below, around the nest.

Baits

Use boric acid/ sugar solution bait as a least-toxic control. To make the bait mix 3 cups of water, 1cup sugar and 4 level teaspoons of boric acid. Half fill a small screw-topped jar with cotton wool, saturate with bait, screw the lids on tightly, seal with adhesive tape, pierce several small holes in the lid to allow the ants access but prevent removal by larger animals. Keep away from children and pets. This takes a few weeks to wipe out a colony but is more effective than using highly toxic pesticides that only kill the foraging ants, not the colony. Some ants will prefer a mint jelly or peanut butter bait.

Sticky Barriers

Use sticky barriers, such as Tanglefoot and Trappit Barrier Glue, around tree trunks to aid in the biological control of scales, aphids and mealy bugs, as ants patrol trees defending these pests from attack by their natural enemies, in order to maintain their supply of honeydew. Very young trees or sensitive trees such as citrus should be banded with masking or packing tape before applying the glue, as the bark may be liable to damage.

Before developing your pest management strategy, decide if you really need to do anything at all? Is it a plant you care about; is the damage sufficiently bad to warrant your intervention? For example, the beautiful Large Citrus butterfly does very little damage to citrus trees, losing a few leaves seems a small price to pay for having it in your garden. If the answer is yes, then choose from several of the suggested physical, biological and least-toxic chemical controls. Organic gardening relies on several overlapping strategies rather than the power of a single highly toxic chemical to kill the pest."

Trout fishing in fast moving clear water?

What kind of bait, lure, technique is best. I read a floating rap. I went to buy one and none of them say floating. There is one that suspends and makes a sound, one that pops. I do not know which to buy and being that both are $13.00, i do not want to buy both. Do i use a lure and livebait to sweeten the deal? I will be fishing from shore. I ca use a slip bob in a pool in the rapids, if i can reach it. This is VERY fast moving water, it is a river emptying into Lake Superior
should i use live bait with the spinners?
Does it matter if the lure floats on the surface, because they just will not stay below the water surface, the water is just too fast.

forget the spinners,

What are you fishing for?? Yes Gulp alive is a good bait, it is very popular especially for inshore fishing. It's pretty much the same as regular Gulp (just packaged different) they say it's not the same but it's close. I've heard people say they don't like it for bass fishing, personally I've only used it for Redfish, Seatrout, Snook and stuff like that

HOW TO USE A CRANKBAIT?

HOW DO I PROPERLY USE MY BOMBER CRANKBAIT AND CATCH FISH!?

I love bomber cranks. There are 2 classes for me, shallow and deep. On the shallow Square A model I like to cast near weed line or along side lay downs (fallen trees) and docks. If you can let the lip hit a piece of cover and kill your reel so it will float backward and not hang up that causes a reaction strike. Alos i like to use in the shallows during the pre and post spawn times. Now the Bomber A model I only fish in rocky, sandy bottoms. I will reel the lure down so it roots in the bottom kicking up silt and looks like a bait fish feeding. When I hit a rock or piece of cover I will again stop reeling and allow the bait to float up and clear the cover and keep going. Now if I am going deeper than 6-8 ft I will switch to a Bomber Fat Free Shad. I like to use this in more open water around points and humps. I also like to cast to drop offs and reel up the slope. My favorite bomber colors are threadfin shad and pear shad,I dont know why it's called pearl it has a green back and side markings. Hope I was able to help give you some ideas and covered the model you are using. The three I mentioned are the only ones I have ever used.

Any Lake/Reservior Fishing Tips? (Musky/Pike)?

Me and my friend have fished in the Green Lane Reservior in PA a couple of times. We have had fish jumping all around us, mostly seem to be bass. For some reason we can't catch any. What kind of bait should we be using? Also we here there are Pike and Musky in the reservior and want to try trolling for them... Should we use live bait? if so what? or should we be using shad rapps?

Fly Fishing Tackle

Assuming you want to catch a lot of fish on your next outing, you’ll need to take into account what sort of fishing you plan to do. The fishing equipment you decide on will mostly be dictated by the space you fish at, the species of fish and whether you’re an expert or beginner.

Before you visit fly fishing tackle shops, you may want brush up on the "language" of tackle. Here are a few important terms:

At the bottom end of the rod is a butt cap made of rubber or sometimes cork. Generally, you'll find butt caps on rods that use line weights of 1 to 6 pounds. The butt cap is constructed so that it can be pressed into the body when fighting to land a fish.

The reel seat is the attachment point for the reel. There are several methods of attachment, but most rods have a threaded hood that screws down onto a foot that extends from the reel. Types of reel seats include up-locking, down-locking and sliding band.

Fly Fishing Tackle

If you are shore fishing in a small lake or pond, you will probably do best with a light fishing rod and reel. Spin casting reels are preferred for this type fishing because they will permit the longest casting reach with no backlash. A 6 ft or 7 ft rod will suffice for smaller fish. If you go after bigger fish, you might need a lightweight mono filament fishing line. The best lure to use would be earthworms in this case. When you are drifting or anchored on a bigger-sized lake, you should opt for a 7-foot, size 30 fishing rod. But those who decide to go trolling will probably need along with the lure a rod counting reel in order to reach the desired depth. You might think about using a 16-20 lb. mono having a 6 inch leader of 20 lb. fluorocarbon.

Fishing Tackle

So what equipment do you need for large mouth bass that swim in freshwater? It would be best to use a dependable light spinning rod and reel because a heavy rod will exhaust you very quickly. A 6 lb. mono having a 10 lb. fluorocarbon 4 ft. leader makes the most sense. Lures, minnows, and worms all make good bait. When it comes to saltwater fishing a well-liked method is surf fishing; with such fishing it is pertinent to keep your bait in the trenches in order to catch the game fish. Fishing of this type requires heavy equipment. 10-12 foot rod as well as a 30 size spinning reel. Add to this a 30 lb. fluorocarbon leader of around 6 ft.
Generally speaking, higher-priced rods are made for veteran fishermen. They come with state of the art components and features. A basic rod will do for light or recreational fishing. If you’re a beginner in the UK who wishes to fish more frequently, you will later need high-end fishing equipment using state of the art improvements.
