Fishing spoons in saltwater?
Off of my dock in FL it is 8-20 ft deep. How should I fish spoons off of there? Should I jig them up and down or reel them in quickly or what? Also, what conditions should I use different colors (silver, gold). Oh yeah and it's 8ft below the dock and 20 when you cast out. Thanks!
In general you fish spoons by casting them out, sinking them to the depth you think the fish are at, then winding them in at the speed which gives them the best action. Different lures work best at different speeds, so start by watching the lure in the water and trying different speeds. If you wind too fast, it will generally spin (which isn't the best action); if it's too slow it won't wobble at all. Sometimes wobbling it in a ways, then stopping periodically to let it sink for a few seconds, then resuming the retrieve will work.
If you see fish working out there, cast past them and bring it in through them, otherwise cast to structure, or just cast as far as you can so you're covering more water with each cast. Try different depths, too. If you hold the rod tip up, the lure will tend to come to the surface as you reel in, so retrieve with the rod tip down to keep it from coming up as quickly.
