Where is the line drawn between the genres of "scientific-thriller" and "science-fiction"?
When does a sci-thri (ex. James Rollins', "The Judas Strain") become a little too scientific?
Scientific thriller is usually set in today's world with today's science. Although, almost inevitably, there will be an advance that is only theoretical these days. Science fiction involves theoretical advances and are set in the future, allowing time for a view of the world made possible by such an advance.
So if someone has just discovered cold fusion, that is a scientific thriller, if you have a story about ten years after cold fusion is discovered, that is science fiction.
As for when it is too scientific, that depends on the writer. Take Michael Crichton, his specialty has always been a flood of technical data, whether he was writing the Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, or ER. Personally, he isn't to my taste, but he obviously is to a lot of people.
