Video on Demand on VOD has been bandied around for years now and it wasn't until the technology for it has matured recently that we are now seriously looking at it to revolutionize the way consumer enjoy their movies. Computer companies stand to make a fortune on any project that will require a Hollywood film studio to computerize its film vaults. By digitizing their film libraries in the format that can be understood by consumer electronics over the internet or through private fiber optic cables and telephone lines, studios can commercialize its library and make a killing in the VOD markets consisting basically of TV cable and internet users.
This is likely to eliminate the need for video rental shops as known today. Alternately, video shops can be the middle men managing the video on demand traffic between the film studios and the households.
A New Business Model
Film studios like Warner Bros, Universal Studios, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney and Paramount Pictures stand to gain with huge profits from a wave of VOD. Officials from Sony are taking this seriously and just might surprise the market soon with products in this direction. Video rental of films from Hollywood is an $8 Billion business annually that is expected to get a makeover once VOD goes into full swing.
The business model is simple. Households need not rent video anymore. With a satellite cable TV or broadband internet connection, they can just download copy-protected video in either streaming or file formats to watch at anytime they want for a fee that shouldn't be more than what they pay for in video rental shops. Blockbuster can get into the business by acting as a central online distributor that puts the films available from the film studios and gets commission in the VOD charges made. This way, their rental businesses get into an evolutionary step by doing the rental of video streams in virtual cyberspace.
Some Technical Hurdles
Apply the brakes for now, there are some technical issues to be overcome to make VOS commercially appealing to the homeowner now used to simply walking to a nearby video rental store to get all the video he wants, or online.
A film of decent quality takes around 1GB to data. The home's current cable network may not be able to accommodate this while watching other cable TV programs. It certainly can't be streamed over regular phone lines. You need a broadband connection or fiber to the home to make downloading a file of this size acceptably fast.
The immense data behind a 2-hour movie needs to be transmitted in less than 10 minutes over the standard home cables and then decoded by a computer or a TV set-top box. For now, those cable set top boxes are essentially computers that can decode digital signals into analog for the regular television sets.
Digital TV Opens Up VOD
The advent of digital television will facilitate this migration as television sets will soon be all digital to accept the digital signals form studios as mandated by law. The bandwidth for receiving VOD becomes a matter of course. Film studios or distribution companies can get into business partnership with cable operators and TV studios to get their digital films into the mainstream digital cables into the homes. GP
