what knot should I use for mustad salmon hook?
I recently bought some Mustad salmon hooks and tried to tie on 40 pound test monofilament fishing line and discovered that the gap between the end of the eye loop and the shank was too big to use the palomar or duncan loop knots so I tried the nail knot and that worked until the line started to slip into the loop. what I am looking for is 1) a knot that is tight enough that it will slip very little or will not be able to slip through the gap and a link to a place that i can see it being tied or 2) another way i should secure the hook to my line to make sure it will stay on the hook while i fight a fish.
A "bait loop" is an excellent, general case knot for securing hooks. There's no real loop unless you want one. It can be used for various "live" salmon baits.
Another feature that makes it "general case" is, the same knot can be used if you want another hook up further on the line. You can't do that with every knot.
